A city can be walked. Or tasted. In October 2026, Košice chooses the second path — and turns it into a product.
Taste Košice is not another weekend of tents between a fountain and a banner. The official site frames it as the first city-wide gastro festival whose stage is the whole city: streets, historic rooms, restaurants, cafés, bars and wine bars. More than fifteen venues have lined up thirty-five events. Those numbers are not decoration; they show the festival is not one hotel and one chef, but a network that chose to speak with one voice.
A brand, not a one-off
Behind the project stand members of Gastrokomora Visit Košice — the professional chamber of restaurants, wine bars, bars and cafés. Chair Peter Škripko describes a brand that does not flatten the local scene into a single style. It wants the opposite: diversity, people and stories. Grant support comes from the City of Košice, Visit Košice and Creative Industry Košice. Michaela Spišáková Podoláková, executive director of Visit Košice, repeats what operators already feel on the floor: food and drink are a key filter when visitors pick a destination. The festival is meant as a catalyst for lasting collaboration — not one October burst and then silence.
For an owner outside Košice, the blueprint is readable. Not “copy this festival”. Rather: give the city a shared calendar, a shared brand umbrella, and mix fine dining with street and community formats. A guest who arrives for a marathon, a conference or a weekend still needs a clear answer: what can I taste here?
October as a score
The programme has anchors around which a week can be built.
On 3 October, Taste of Fire opens the festival at Ohnisko Fire Dining & Brew Bar. The link with the International Peace Marathon is deliberate: two major October events meet at open fire, live cooking and the bar. Ohnisko and La Hacienda are set to join kitchens for the day; vinyl DJ sets, a live concert, a bar workshop, coffee cupping and Tokaj tastings complete the picture. The symbolism is simple — when the city runs, the city also cooks.
On 10 October, Levočský dom — home of Pivovar Hostinec — marks four hundred years since the wedding of Gabriel Bethlen and Catherine of Brandenburg. A historic parade and reconstruction come with period atmosphere and food inspired by a story that once unfolded in the city itself. For a venue, that is a reminder: local history is not wallpaper. It can be a menu and a reason to book.
From 14 to 16 October, Gurmánske putovanie Fest at Villa Sandy and Seven Restaurant Café offers three evenings and three chefs, including two top Slovak names and one Michelin-starred foreign guest. On 17 October, locality gathers at Gurmánska tržnica Slávia in the historic Slávia passage — growers, craft producers, winemakers, chefs. On 21 October, Tokaj gets its own night, Dve tváre Tokaja, with wines from Jaroslav Macik and Matúš Vdovjak. And late in the month, according to the official calendar on 23–25 October, Urban Taste Košice arrives: street and urban food, wine, drinks, DJs and live music.
Add Día de los Muertos, Velvet & Wine, Pivo Fest, brunches and more stops — the festival leaves room for a guest to return, not to sprint past a single ticket.
What to take beyond Hlavná
The strongest lesson for owners is not the date list. It is the architecture of the project.
First: a shared calendar beats scattered events. When fifteen venues play the same month under one brand, marketing energy multiplies — and guests build their own route. Second: a brand umbrella (Taste Košice) allows diversity without chaos. Fine dining next to street food, history next to a DJ set — as long as everything clearly belongs on one flavour map. Third: chamber plus destination plus grant is not extra bureaucracy; it is how individual venues become a tourism product. Visit Košice says it aloud: the aim is a culinary destination, not one weekend.
A typical October visitor need not leave with a fridge magnet. They can leave with a taste — and a reason to come back. For operators that means planning capacity, special menus and neighbour collaborations before the season hits. The full programme lives at tastekosice.sk. October is only the brand’s opening act; the real test comes when the partnerships outlast the last DJ set.
This time Košice is not only selling a view of Hlavná Street. It is selling a reason to stay for dinner — and that is a product any owner in Slovakia can translate into their own city.
